Video exclusive: Abbado’s assistant leads peace protest in Istanbul

Alpaslan Ertüngealp is a Tukish conductor and pianist who has worked as Claudio Abbado’s assistant for the past two years.

At the Istanbul International Music Festival last week, he conducted a concert with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen. The concert was warmly received and Alpaslan was called back to lead an encore. Here’s what he did:

I conducted Mozart KV587 as an encore and put on a surprise T-shirt just for the encore to promote peace and send a message to the crowds and those related to the atrocities in Turkey. The short amateur video shows the moments when I appeared with my t-shirt on stage at the end of the concert. The spoon in my hand is for solidarity to those resisting from their homes; the contredance has a subtle message to the public: Resist to the ottoman mind.

Now watch the exclusive amateur video, and listen to those cheers.

    Fabulous! Bravo!

  3. Bravo! What with the piano concert in the park, the “Looters Philharmonic Orchestra,” and spontaneous performances, music is certainly playing a role in the protests.
