Bruno Bartoletti, artistic director of the Lyric Opera in Chicago from 1964 to 1999 and conducted there perennially for more than half a century, has died in Florence, two days before his 87th birthday.
Bartoletti, a guest at Glyndebourne, Salzburg, Covent Garden and the Met, was artistic director of the Maggio Musicale in Florence, 1985-91. An opera specialist, he made a sheaf of recording and showed little interest in non-vocal repertoire. He was trusted and much liked by the great singers of his time.
His wife, Rosanna, whom he had known since childhood, died two years ago. The couple are survived by two daughters and various grandchildren.
