Tweet that: Stephen Fry to play Britten opera

The actor-turned-Twitter-magnate has put his name to a new production of Benjamin Britten’s long-discarded first opera, Paul Bunyan.

More narrated singspiel than music drama, Bunyan occupied Britten during his wartime self-exile in the US and was not brought to public attention for almost half a century. Fry will prerecord the spoken title role for a Welsh National Youth Opera production that opens at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff  on August 23.

It’s good to see SF doing something worthwhile. He does squander his great talent and brain-power on rubbish. For all the good stuff – like his BBC documentary on Wagner, and the four novels – there’s an awful lot of tat.
