Maestro to Maestro: Mariss Jansons sends birthday wishes

Among many good wishes from his various orchestras assembled on his Facebook page, some a shade obsequious, here’s a happy birthday wish from a senior colleague:

With Valery Gergiev’s appointment as Principal Conductor of theMariinsky Theatre it immediately became clear that a new era had begun there. Life began to seethe, and vivid talents and new names emerged. A huge and diverse repertoire developed, collaboration with outstanding performers was expanded and numerous tours undertaken both in Russia and abroad. This famed theatre began to train promising singers for its stage. All of this confirms the fact that the theatre is directed by a talented, strong and energetic leader. Today, too, his amazing energy cannot but amaze and enchant, and his open and friendly manner of communication has increased the circle of the Mariinsky Theatre’s many friends. The desire to make new discoveries in music and the constant updating of the repertoire make life at the theatre incredibly interesting. A conductor of incredible charisma and individuality, he has won the love of an army of fans. Valery has given St Petersburg audiences not just new and talented Russian performers but invited outstanding internationally acclaimed musicians and singers as well. Gergiev’s festivals help to develop music in countless cities and countries. We could compile an endless list of glowing examples of his creative activities. Valery and I have enjoyed a close friendship for many years. I hope he brings all his artistic ideas and personal plans to life and I wish him every success and happiness — long may he continue to bring joy to his fans.
