Chet Baker, a treasured memory

Twenty-five years ago today, the great jazz trumpeter and vocalist was found dead beneath the window of his Amsterdam hotel room, apparently the victim of a drugs-induced accident.

Our friends at London Jazz News have reproduced the late Mike Zwerin’s brilliant article, reporting his death in the context of his art. Read it here.

I would like to pay a tribute to the late Mike Zwerin. His prose in this obituary of Chet Baker is jazz as its best: terse, raw, pulsing with rhythm. He was also a fine jazz musician and this shines through in his writing. Chet Baker will certainly not be forgotten, but let us make an effort to make sure Mike Zwerin isn’t either.
