Brigitte’s gone for Herring in her Vienna debut

Truly exciting news from the Vienna Volksoper. The transcendent Brigitte Fassbender makes her debut with the company is director of Britten’s Albert Herring. Who’d have guessed that one of the greatest German mezzos had a quiet pash for a English village hall comedy?

And…. wait for it…. the Dancing Conductor is back.… with the Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Hot buns all round at the Volksoper.

This is not her first Britten. Already in 1992 she directed “The Turn of the Screw” for the Israel opera in Tel Aviv! It was considered a great success as far as I can remember.

And Britten’s Midsummer night’s Dream as a touring production for the Netherlands Opera in the mid 90s. The production was also seen in Tel Aviv.

The film is not without it’s jarring moments (Mahler 9 is being discussed while we are watching a rehearsal of Mahler 5, and some other similar instances) but it seemed to cover some new ground, so worth seeing!
