Breaking: Claudio Abbado announces free concert for Florence crisis

The Maggio Musical in Florence faces closure within days unless a solution can be found to its financial and organisational chaos (you can read a good backgroiund report here). Zubin Mehta, its music director, has gone on air appealing to the world to save this cultural gem. Today, Claudio Abbado joined his appeal.

Press release:

Florence, Monday, April 29, 2013

Maestro Claudio Abbado will conduct his concert, scheduled for Saturday, May 4, 2013 for free.

“The Maestro Claudio Abbado has informed me that he will conduct for free his concert on May 4 in the Teatro Comunale as a sign of solidarity and friendship with the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino.

In this difficult time, I consider the act of Maestro Abbado a concrete sign of support that contributes to the objective of saving cultural institutions as important as ours.

The decision of Claudio Abbado is a stimulus for everyone —even those with different roles and responsibilities— to join forces to ensure that the Maggio continues to play the vital role it has been playing in the cultural life of the country.

On behalf of the artistic people, workers of the theater, and myself, I express deep appreciation and gratitude to Maestro Abbado for his sensitivity and the support that he offers.”
