Xu Zhong has just been named music director of the Haifa Symphony Orchestra, succeeding the veteran composer Noam Sherriff.
He has a four-year contract, 16 weeks a year, and is the first Chinese citizen to hold an official post of any kind in Israel. Relations between Israel and China are, at best, wary.
Xu Zhong is also Artistic Director of Teatro Massimo Bellini Catania in Italy and of Shanghai Oriental Symphony Orchestra.
