Met’s legendary Carmen dies, at 99

Rise Stevens, who held the mezzo corner at the Met against all comers through the 1940s and 50s, has died at a venerable age. Aside from Carmen, she held a lockdown on Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier, New York born and bred, she was one of the Met’s few home-grown stars.

    A national treasure! Thank God for recordings….we can listen and keep her in our hearts forever. Just think…Pavarotti, Sutherland, Rise, and “Bubbles”. all singing opera in heaven for all eternity.
