A composer’s house is demolished – twice

meyerbeer

This is what’s left of the house where Giacomo Meyerbeer was born. It was a wayside inn in Rüdersdorf, where Meyerbeer’s mum got caught short while travelling from Frankfurt an Oder to Berlin on September 5, 1791. The original inn was knocked down, but a plaque was posted on the successor restaurant, the Deutsches Haus, in 1966. The restaurant went out of business and the house was converted to residential accommodation. It has stood empty for some years and has now been knocked down. The locals, however, are trying to ensure that the plaque is reinstalled. More here.
