The new chief conductor of the Galicia Symphony Orchestra in Spain is Dima Slobodeniouk, a Russian graduate of Jorma Panula’s class at the Sibelius Academy. He has been head of the Oulu Symphony and the Korsholm Festival. The agent’s fee goes to K D Schmid in Hannover.

Congratulations, Maestro!
With his future cleared, he can now fully focus on guest conducting my local band in St. Gallen, Switzerland next week.
Slobodeniouk has studied with Panula, but I don’t think Panula was the professor any more by the time Slobodeniouk started in the conducting class at the Sibelius Academy. I guess you could say “Panula’s class” in the sense of his legacy. The job is currently open, by the way. Atso Almila (Slobodeniouk’s professor) has been appointed again for a short temporary term until they find a new person.
