Chetham’s: Guardian claims five teachers suspected of sex abuse

Tomorrow’s Guardian will name two more teachers at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester who engaged in inappropriate sexual activity with pupils. The accusations have arisen from the conviction last week of former National Youth Choirs director Mike Brewer of indecent assault on a girl pupil who, as an adult, testified and killed herself during the trial. Brewer and his ex-wife were remanded in custody to await sentencing.

Chetham’s told the Guardian: ‘The police are now investigating some historic allegations of abuse at the school which have been the subject of recent newspaper reports. We will be assisting the police in whatever way we can. While this investigation is ongoing it would not be appropriate for the school to comment any further save to say that we encourage anyone who has any relevant information to contact Greater Manchester police on 101, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.’

  1. Unsavoury accounts of Ryszard Bakst’s advances towards female students in todays Guardian. Very sad.
It prompted me to look him up on youtube-very fine Chopin pianist indeed, and some memories from former students in the comments section: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Et3qzsQD0k

  2. Graf Nugent says:

Bakst had all the star pupils at the RNCM when I was there. Another untouchable, it seems. Layfield wasn’t yet Head of Strings.
