Zurich conservatoire mourns longterm director

Hans Ulrich Lehmann, who ran the highly respected Zurich Hochschule from 1976 to 1998, has died, aged 75.  Himself a student of Boulez and Stockhausen, Lehmann was unafraid of innovation – a quality rare in conservatoire directors. Lehmann was a composer of mostly local esteem.

I am saddened by the demise of Hans Ulrich. He was a fine, forward-looking musician whose works merit performance. I remember including “Tasten” on two of my programs along with Berio, Schoenberg, Mimaroglu ahd “Gandini. The Lehman work was much appreciated and bristled with artistic excellence. May he rest in peace. And may his music be discovered by the uninitiatiated.
