Moscow: Acid attacker ‘knew Bolshoi boss by name’

The mother of Sergei Filin, the Bolshoi ballet chief who was pelted with acid on his doorstep after a gala last Thursday, has been telling the Moscow press that the attacker called him ‘Sergei’ before throwing the acid in his face. Filin has undergone the first of several operations to save his sight and restore his face.

She added that her son had complained of being stalked since December 31. His email and facebook page were hacked and foul messages were posted on his website, which was taken down. Threatening phone calls followed. Filin had talked of going to the police, but never made a complaint.

The authorities are saying the attack sounds more and more like an inside job, arising from ballet rivalry. Personal relations at the Bolshoi are said to be appalling.
