European churches pay homage to John Tavener

The British composer, 68, has been announced as the 2013 winner of the Prize for European Church Music. The award is for his ‘deep spirituality’ rather than for attachment to any particular creed. He has devotee of most and, at times, of none.

Past winners include Arvo Pärt, Krzysztof Penderecki and Petr Eben.

    As far as I can read here

    the prize is not awarded by any European chuches, but by the German city of Schwäbisch Gmünd (60,000 inhabitants). The decision is apparently taken by the board of the local Festival for European Church Music, but I couldn’t find out who sits in this board. You wil find the festival’s sponsors (mostly local business) here:
