Norman Lebrecht on shifting sound worlds

And the one on the right was a New York City Washington Heights girl from the ‘hood”. W.H. was a Greek community at the time, though I am told she was not as elegant and slim when she was young as she is in the picture. (I remember a Greek bakery in that neighborhood on Audobon Avenue that was in business for decades, and must have been operating when she was a teenager- though the cookies and desserts were geared to producing more of a body type like Jane Eaglen’s…….(and the bakery owner’s).
What a great, great artist, and one whose work serious young instrumental students would do well to study.
(Conversely, I understand that Frank Sinatra used to learn from Heifetz recordings and performances.)
