Here’s a short video of Charles Rosen, taken recently in Paris by the photographer Marion Kalter (on her phone, it was all she had to hand), in which the great musical analyst gives a three-minute discourse on the making of Pierre Boulez.
He’s speaking fluent French, and you don’t need to understand that language in order to grasp the effortless authority that Charles exerted over an audience, any audience, whether as pianist, speaker or writer. Charles Rosen’s death was announced today, at the age of 85.

It is most unfortunate that many of us could not access this particular video. I’m sure that Rosen was most eloquent and informative while addressing this subject. Do you have any further information regarding the accessibility of this video? Please inform us when convenient.
Cordially, Francis
It’s on vimeo. I suspect that may be blocked in the US.
Can you provide us a link? I live in the US and routinely access vimeo.
“in full flow”… jeez that’s a colorful turn of phrase.
Blocked here too in South Africa
Oh darn, would really like to see this.
Any chance of a quick upload to youtube ?
thanks from Toronto
And for those of us who are not on Facebook (some people still aren’t, believe it or not)?
Lebrecht Music&Arts have uploaded a new version on Youtube. Watch here: http://www.artsjournal.com/slippeddisc/2012/12/charles-rosen-in-full-flow-addressing-pierre-boulez.html
Ca marche! et c’est hors prix. Merci vous-tube.
Great … thank you, Norman!
I have a clip of Elliott Carter during a rehearsal speaking French somewhere (equally fluently, if not more so) … that would make a nice video response on YT! I’ll have to hunt around a bit for it, though…
Oh do, please!
Thanks for the accessible video. Nice to know we can continue without Faecebook. Loved the airplane access ladder analogy.
thanks a million for the youtube upload, appreciate it
