The last piece by Elliott Carter to be performed before his death last night was Dialogue 2, written for Daniel Barenboim’s 70th birthday and conducted for him at La Scala last week by Gustavo Dudamel. Carter was 103, Dudamel is 31.
The score, finished a few weeks earlier, was practically wet on the page.
