Following the bleak weekend of long knives at El Pais in Madrid, Germany’s Frankfurter Rundschau went into protective bankruptcy on Monday, putting 500 jobs in jeopardy. The centre-left Rundschau has lost upwards of 15 million Euros every year since 2006. The Social Democratic Party has a strong interest in its survival, but there are few white knights in the offing.
The Swiss-French newspaper Le Temps also told staff that it will have to lay off large numbers, still unspecified. And the Swiss-German Basler Zeitung media group has shut down several subsidiaries and laid off at least 25 staff.
