London’s Aurora Orchestra are planning an interactive concert with a klezmer group next week to explore Mahler’s putative negagement with Jewish music. The intention is good but the execution, from the film that follows, seems to lack essential context.
Having identified and discussed klezmer and Jewish themes in Why Mahler?,
it is important to understand that Mahler never made verbal reference to Jewish themes in his music – and that his use of them is always ironic, designed to suggest disquiet and disapproval, rather than recognition. The players in the video below appear to lack this understanding. Placing the two side by side in a concert is rather like serving raw meat and cooked indiscriminately on the same plate – irrelevant and potentially a health hazard.
