Georg Solti: the good times come flooding back

There are two TV documentaries coming up about the irrepressible conductor and I’ve had a whale of a time taking part in both of them, warmly recalling a man and a musician who was a life force in everything he did.

Arte, the Franco-German arts channel will show Georg Wuebbolt’s new film,  “Sir Georg Solti – Für mein Leben habe ich kaempfen muessen” on October 31 at 10.10 pm. The title is pinpoint perfect: Solti’s was a life of constant struggle.

You may remember the director from his brilliant documentary a couple of years back about Carlos Kleiber. This film, too, will be internationally available on DVD.

The BBC have also produced a Solti epic, which we can expect to see towards the end of the year.

Decca are bringing out a spate of boxed sets to mark the centenary and there will be Solti features on many classical radio stations on or around the actual 100th birthday, 21 October.

Fantastic news, and I can’t wait. Anybody with a few minutes to spare might like to type into YouTube search, ‘solti wagner rehearsal vienna bbc’ (or similar). There you’ll find clear evidence as to why Solti has the reputation he has, and why it’s so deserved. There’s a wealth of BBC recordings available here, and it’s very easy to wile away an hour or so. You’ve been warned!

You might also type, ‘Nilsson recording session humour’ into that same YouTube search field – it’s very funny!

I’ve just compared the Decca special Solti Ring release (which includes de BLU RAY audio with the whole of the Ring) with the SACD ESoteric edition of the same recording – the Esoteric wins by a landslide!
Moreover, Decca claims that the remastering used on this BLU RAY edition is of 24Bit/96Hz, but in my Oppo it plays only 48Hz, and with a hard sound reminiscent form the “”Good Old Days” of the CD…
