The ending of music residencies at Banff continues to provoke widespread disquiet across Canada’s arts community. Here’s a sample of group action, sent to Slipped Disc:
Dear Jeff Melanson and the Board of Governors at the Banff Centre,
This letter is in regards to the recent announcement that the Fall and Winter Creative Music residencies will no longer continue in its present format. Although there was no indication of what kind of future programming will take its place, this news brought about a deep sense of loss. I have been a participant in many of the music programs at the Banff Centre for over 20 years, and the residencies in particular have had a huge impact on my musical life. To erase something that is probably the most special gift for an artist – the time and space to create – is truly sad. I feel incredibly lucky to have had these experiences. The Banff Centre has always been symbolic of the hope to grow and gain courage on our artistic paths.
As the email announcement did not include specifics on what changes will occur, I and the below signed would like to be included in the discussion about these changes. This is to ensure that the future programming at the centre reflects the voices of those who will be affected. We feel a sense of responsibility to protect what has been a gift to us, for our fellow and future musicians and collaborators.
Sincerely,
Rosabel Choi

Ms. Choi speaks eloquently to the need for programs such as Banff to foster creativity and growth in classical artists. I do hope that the future direction of programs at this esteemed and beloved Centre do not drift away from a mission of fostering and promoting excellence in classical music.
