Our Dutch colleague Neil van der Linden has sent us this terrible news:
DAMASCUS (02/08/2012): According to Syrian human rights organizations at least 18 people were killed on Thursday in the Palestinian refugee camp Yarmuk in Damascus, where thousands of residents of neighbouring districts have sought refuge, thinking they would be safer among the Palestinian refugees. Mortar shells hit a busy street killing at least 18 civilians and wounding scores of others. Tonight there were large demonstrations in Yarmuk in protest against the killings. Further unrest is expected for tomorrow.
Neil adds: This refugee camp is where the Music in Me foundation established a beautiful music school. Under the umbrella of Music in Me we had workshops and concerts by renowned Dutch music ensembles, the Yuri Honing Trio, Tarhana and Farida Mohammed Ali and the Iraqi Maqam Ensemble.
Here are some pictures from 2006/7. Do share them with Mr Putin.
