Gergiev is victim of Pussy Riot hoax

A Russian news site has been pumping up expectations with a story that Valery Gergiev last night publicly threatened to quit as head of the Maryinsky Theatre unless the girl-band Pussy Riot trial defendants were released.

The story has been going viral online. Only one thing wrong with it: it’s completely untrue. It claimed that Gergiev made the statement to a Covent Garden audience last night. Covent Garden is presently shut for the Olympics (I passed by this morning and can personally vouch for the closure…). And the language of the statement does not sound remotely like Gergiev.

The conductor himself has just tweeted:

“Во избежание недоразумений: “новость” о В.А.Гергиеве, опубликованная сегодня на сайте fognews.ru, не соответствует действительности”, — сообщил он в своем “Твиттере”.

“Отличительной чертой этого так называемого “информационного агентства” является публикация намеренно неправдивых, пародийных “новостей”, Подробнее.

“To avoid misunderstanding, the news of Valery Gergiyev, published today on the site fognews.ru is not true. The distinguishing feature of this so-called” news agency is the publication of deliberately untruthful, parody news.

  1. Gergiev going up against his old pal, Mr Money-Bags Putin? I don’t think so!

  2. Of course he doesn’t. It’s bogus. Gergiev isn’t even in London, not to say there wasn’t Carmen in ROH…

  3. Neil van der Linden says:

Unfortunately probably it is not true.
Indeed he is too close to silly Putty.

Yes when it came to Georgia and South-Ossetia, Gergiev was ready to stand up for the ‘oppressed’. That was in the interest of Putin of course.

The most priceless gems come ( as always ) in comments to Russian article. One particularly interesting exchange takes place between a deeply offended self-righteous prig who sarcastically asks Gergiev if he would defend as a free speech and “cultural act” somebody defecating inside the piano during Mozart’s Requiem. Upon which statement a few readers cheerfully tell him that there is no ****** piano in Mozart’s Requiem.
Other interesting tidbits from comments : turns out Gergiev wrote himself a bonus check from Mariinsky in amount of 28 million rubles last year – it is but a rumor but it is coming from an anonymous voice inside of the theater – the same voice with few others states that at least some if not majority ofMariinsky performers and employees are seething with dissent , calling themselves “ prisoners of Caucasus” (Kavkazskiye plenniky – a word play on both famous Pushkin poem and Gergiev nationality) , fondly remembering Temirkanov times at then-Kirov. There was always this notion that Gergiev “brutally stole”, with help of high connections, brutality and cunning, the successful opera house that Temirkanov worked so selflessly hard to lift from ashes of Soviet times…

And the comments only get more surreal : we now have a live witness to the opera performance and maestro speech ( neither took place?) ! Google translation:
“I have a friend of mine and his wife both attended the opera. He told me that the audience gave a standing ovation the great maestro. It is the fact that no one has returned the tickets- they were kept in the memory of this wonderful event. Tickets for this opera are now canceled if they are to sell at auction, will cost much more. They are now collector’s rarity.”
Original Russian ( hard to believe)
“У меня друг с женой присутствовали на этой опере. Рассказывал, что зал стоя рукоплескал великому Маэстро. И билеты в самом деле никто не сдал – их оставили в память об этом удивительном событии. Билеты с этой отменённой оперы теперь, если их на аукционе продавать, будут стоить намного дороже. Они теперь коллекционный раритет. “

I am encouraged by Pussy Riot’s actions. I am an American that believes in the right to free speech and this has been denied in Russia for the most part. I know that America isn’t as much a free democracy as it has been, with our bogus “patriot act”, but Russia’s powers that be are putting on a huge fraud when their leaders and their state run RT pretend that they are anything close to a democracy is hilarious in one sense, but sad for the citizens of Russia.
America has a long way to regain its citizens “true” freedom, and Russia hasn’t really had it yet. Putin is a dick and so are his government friends. Thank God for Pussy Riot’s bravery to start the process of the people enpowering themselves.
Russian people and American people have a lot in common. They are both generally good people that want to live a free life, raise their children in a relatively safe place and occasionally have a good time. The problem is our governments ad the people that run them. In America, some big corporations “buy” our politicians, in Russia, I don’t know if Putin is the puppet or the puppet master. But I do know that the people of both countries deserve better and I wish the best for Pussy Riot who may go down in history as the ones who saved Russia from it’s arrogant dickhead leader. ROCK ON PUSSY RIOT. John Swan
