The conductor has been left ‘speechless’ by the death of Ulrike Hessler, intendant of the Semper Oper Dresden. He has issued the following statement from the office of the Salzburg Easter Festival, where Ulrike was instrumental in arranging his residency after Simon Rattle pulled out with the Berlin Philharmonic. Peter Alward, the festival director, adds his appreciation of a much valued, sorely missed colleague.

“With the passing of Ulrike Hessler, we are losing a highly valued collaborator and faithful friend, who was responsible in great measure for the successful conclusion of our new partnership with Dresden and Christian Thielemann. Our thoughts are with her family at this difficult time. Ulrike Hessler will always retain a special place in our memory”, says Peter Alward, Managing Director and Intendant of the Salzburg Easter Festival.
“The passing of Ulrike Hessler renders me both speechless and fills me with deep sadness. Yesterday, Ulrike’s former boss at Bavarian State Opera, Sir Peter Jonas, published a personal tribute.
