Anne-Sophie Mutter and Jonas Kaufmann vs Angela Merkel

The violinist and the tenor were among 37 prominent Germans invited by the Süddeutsche Zeitung this weekend to put questions to the Chancellor.

Mutter wanted to know: if you didn’t have to rely on the voters, what would be your priorities for demographic development in education, old-age care and preventive health.

Merkel: In a democracy you always have to listen to the voters.

Kaufmann asked: what was your confirmation credo? and does it mean anything to you today?

Merkel: Corinthians 13: And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. It guides me in dealing with the people I meet.

  1. I don’t know how I stumbled into you guys, but boy was that a stroke of luck.
I’m a retired engineer who in another life was a musician, am back to it
with a vengeance, am annoyingly opinionated. I do see a whole lot in your
topics and threads that I feel very much at home with. This is a great new
discovery for me, very encouraging, an indispensable forum. I’ll be following
it and “venting my own folly from time to time.”

Thank you for creating the outstanding forum.

  2. Nelson Armitano says:

As to be expected, nothing more than a poor politician’s respond.

  3. After some 30+ years of paying attention to the world stage, including some boofheads, psychopaths and outright drongos (& cultures complicit in the assassination of their own peacemakers etc), I get the impression that whatever failings Merkel may have, she has a bit of integrity about her. Just my own impression of course.

  4. God this Merkel gave flat unintelligent answers. She didn’t answer the questions at all. And quoting the Bible? Please. She’s no better than the politicians in the United States. They are all full of crap!

    • Have you not understood Kaufmann’s question she was answering? Or are you just venting for the fun of it?

    • She didn’t quote the bible. She was asked which quote from the bible was her confirmation credo.

    • Eh? You complain she didn’t answer the question; but then, when she’s asked for her confirmation credo (a line from the bible) and she answers the question, you still complain??

  5. The problem was not with the answer to ASM, but with the question. It is an impossible question, because Merkel’s right to exist as a leader is based on the fact she is voted and is there to do what she promised to the voters. She would betray democracy had she answered differently. In that sense it was the only possible answer. and an intelligent one.
