Facing a torrent of protests at their plan to turn the Indianapolis Symphony part time and hire four students in place of adult professionals, the orchestra board has considerably softened its offer. They are now offering a deal that amounts to more than 36 weeks a year and have dropped the student proposal. That it should ever have been raised demonstrates how detached this board is from the requirements of a top orchestra.
