Gustavo Dudamel as you’ve never heard him before

The new Lebrecht Interview series opens next Monday on the BBC with the longest, deepest conversation that Gustavo Dudamel has ever offered on public media.

Over 45 minutes, we discuss his closest relationships – as an only child, with his parents and José Antonio Abreu; as well as  his wife, baby son and the musicians in his two orchestras, the Simon Bolivar and Los Angeles Philharmonic.

He outlines working methods that differ from tradition and from recommended practice for conductors. We discuss politics and religion. He gives the impression of a man who has nothing to hide and who is on a constant upward curve of learning and discovery.

You can hear the interview here at 21.45 London time next Monday, and for a week after on the BBC iplayer.

Here are a couple of shots from the session, taken by producer Paul Frankl.

Good luck with the new series, Norman. No downloads?

  2. Bob Burns says:

Wow! Should be a great listen!

Dudamel is a fascinating personality and a real musical treasure. LA was really lucky to get him and, since he’s so young, he will be a strong musical influence for years to come. I imagine he’s been a great factor in the growth in interest in serious music by youngsters.

PS: Norman, I finally figured out how to subscribe to your BBC show and download your podcasts! :)
