Billie Holiday’s songwriter was Ronald Reagan’s wartime soldier

Don Meyer, who has died aged 93, co-wrote ‘For Heaven’s Sake’ for Billie Holiday’s last album, Lady in Satin, as well as hundreds more songs.

During the War, he was a member of theĀ First Army Motion Picture Unit, under the command of Ronald Reagan. On the domestic side, he was a member of my wife’s family. The funeral’s in Hollywood this afternoon.

LADY IN SATIN was her next to last. The last, also with arrangements by Ray Ellis, was for Verve and is just called LAST RECORDING.

“For Heaven’s Sake” is a nice song, in any case.
