Thomas Quasthoff breaks his silence

Three months after his enforced retirement at 52, the sonorous bass-baritone has spoken out in Der Spiegel against a book by four policy wonks urging a reduction of cultural subsidies – and against the creeping incursion of crap talent contests into German television culture.

Tommy lashes out at the closure of regional theatres and at the so-called Classical Echo award. Great to have him back, fighting fit.

is it a coincidence that all over European countries are cutting cultural subsidies ? Hope that more strong voices like Thomas will raise the issue of closing theatres and many other subjects . It is surely needed.
