First German staging for Auschwitz opera

Very pleased to hear that Karlsruhe have taken up The Passenger by Mieczysław Weinberg for its German premiere next season. It’s a new production by Holger Müller-Brandes, conducted by Christoph Gedschold.

The powerful work, set on a cruise liner and in the Auschwitz death camp, got a mixed reception at English National Opera. My prediction is that it will become a fixture on the world stage in about ten years’ time. This was my view of it. And here is what some others thought.
