The 21st Franco Abbiati music critics award for best production of 2011, chosen by the cream of Italian critics, is the Graham Vick staging of Rossini’s Mose in Egitto that turned the children of Israel into Palestinians and the Egyptians into armed Israeli settlers.
The assembled critics called it ‘vital in symbolic confrontation. Credits: set designer Stuart Nunn, conductor Roberto Abbado, singers Alex Edwards, Sonia Ganassi, Dmitri Korchak, Riccardo Zanellato and Yijie Shi.
In other awards: Conductor of the Year is Daniel Harding, Director Calixto Bieito, Singers Joyce DiDonato and John Graham-Hall, Soloist Isabelle Faust. The Abbiatis are named after an eminent musicologist (1898-1981).
