Germany’s Pianist of the Year – and you’ve never heard of him before

Every year at the world’s largest music fair in Frankfurt, the Bundesverband Klavier eV ( BVK ) awards a prize, worth 3,000 Euros, to the nation’s Klavierspieler des Jahres.

And the winner is….. Dieter Falk!

Never heard of him? We neither. A former church musician, Falk has sold more than 20 million records as a producer for the likes of Avril Lavigne and Paul Young. He judges lots of telly talent shows and has written an arena-packing gospel-pop oratorio, The Ten Commandments. His new album is called Celebrate Bach.

He sounds like a character in a 1990s Gunter Grass novel. Maybe he is.

Here’s a piece of Falk.

And another, with his boys, from the new album
