Renee Fleming thinks the US needs a woman president. Like Mrs Merkel.

The certifiably non-controversial soprano let slip in a German interview that she voted for Barack Obama but would rather see a woman president. ‘I am a big fan of Angela Merkel,’ she says, winningly.

Renee has some kind words to say for Whitney Houston’s technique  - see what she means

and she seems unaware that Thomas Quasthoff has been forced to retire.

Apart from the political remark, the cellophane remains intact. Read here.

Thank you. Incidentally, I’ve just heard Ms. Fleming’s new CD, which contains new Dutilleux, plus Massiaen and Ravel. Beautiful. Mr. Dutilleux still in his 90s and composing! Wonderful.

Of course her political bent in this interview isn’t surprising. Don’t I remember reading in her book (it’s been so long now…) that one of her favorite memories is sitting in the White House kitchen at 3 am with President Clinton and the First Lady at the time and talking jazz?

Isn’t it interesting that she is so very non-controversial in her life, but often the opposite in her work, particularly with rep choices. Exactly the way it should be, I’d think. I second that Brava.
