Is London about to reclaim its first cinema?

It showed the Lumiere Brothers first moving picture in 1896. But for most of the next century it served as an institute of higher education, latterly as the University of Westminster.

Now there are moves to convert it back into a cinema. The location could not be better: a minute’s walk in either direction from Oxford Circus and the BBC. a lot of money will have to be found, but a substantial portion of the funding required to see this cinema restored as a state-of-the-art auditorium has already been raised, I am told.

I’m quite thrilled by the idea and I’m sure others will be, too.

  1. Perhaps they could also include the concert hall London really needs?

  2. Peter Cigleris:

    Seconded.

  3. Oliver Weindling says:

It’s also the place where the Marquee Club first started, with jazz gigs. So the idea of a new concert venue in the area also fits in with its history!
