Exclusive: Moscow’s plan to commemorate 9/11

I had a call this morning from the conductor Thomas Sanderling, presently on Mahler tour in South Africa.

He has been approached by Mikhail Pletnev to conduct the Russian National Orchestra in the city’s tenth-anniversary commemoration of the attacks on New York on September 11, 2001. The work he will perform is Bernstein’s Kaddish Symphony.

Good call.

I wonder if anyone else had the same idea.

  1. They’re probably not the only group in the world to do this, but the Vector Wellington Orchestra is performing John Adams’ On the Transmigration of Souls on 11/09/2011. http://www.wellingtonorchestra.co.nz/content/view/146/196/

  2. Indeed, the Kaddish has artistic, political and humanitarian relevance. Sam Pisar and I have done the new text of his Kaddish since 2003 in capitals around the world, recorded in 2006 at the Lucerne Festival and our NSO concert this week in Washington is in anticipation of the anniversary. Thanks for sharing, Norman.
