CD
Shelly Manne 2-3-4 (Impulse!). This isn’t new, or even a new reissue. It is a timeless album made in 1962 that should not be allowed to get lost in the shuffle. The west coast drummer from New York and the great tenor saxophonist Coleman Hawkins had been colleagues on 52nd Street in the forties. Pianist Hank Jones and bassist George Duvivier joined them for this reunion. It was no nostalgia trip. The four played with a sense of adventure that reflected the changes blowing through jazz in the early sixties. The CD includes Hawkins’ only recorded appearance as a pianist and two tracks with the luminous vibraharpist and pianist Eddie Costa, who died in a car wreck later that year.
