I have to admit that I like Jazz Appreciation Month MUCH better than International Jazz Day. Heck, we just finished a very successful tour with the Stan Kenton Alumni Band, but there was no way to schedule any of it on one particular day.

I enjoyed the concert immensely. What an enormous project to pull off!! Just amazing. It was heartwarming on many levels. Not surprisingly, sound was a bit of a problem, but who could be surprised at that given the venue! Hugh Masekela really moved the audience and me as well. Frustrating, though, not to be able to hear Esperanza better. And i’m so proud of Terri Lyne. Boy, that woman is blowing my mind these days, although she has been for many years now. She was actually around 10 years old when I first heard her at a festival on Jackie Robinson’s estate in CT. Huge round of applause to Herbie and everyone else who was involved in this Int. Jazz Day! Here’s to 2014!
