Bruce, I often think that music gets better as it gets older myself. I grew up in the 60s and 70s, where I think the best music came from, and didn’t think much of it back then. Now, compared to what we have now I can feel the music and appreciate it more. Same can be said about the 1920s and 30s Golden Era, some of which my Grandparents described with such great emotion.

I have had great students do a variety of things. One of my best students, who is 17 years old now, always played with his eyes closed. One time when I asked him, he said that he couldn’t “feel” the music with his eyes open as it was a big distraction. All the good ones that I have worked with find their own thing to focus on and go from there. It helps to be consistent.

Normally, pianists don’t receive the recognition they deserve. Instead, many talentless individuals are called “celebrities”. However, Paderewski is an exception. I never knew about the Paderewski postcards, coins, stamps, and even soap until reading this post. More pianists (including the modern ones) deserve this kind of recognition.

Technology has taken art and education to brand new levels that I never would have dreamed 20 years ago. As an Art History teacher I have seen how technology has changed both industries. Thanks for the post Bruce.

The thing that I notice about certain sheet music is that 5 different pianists can make the same notes sound 5 different ways. Why I believe sheet music is a good tool, it cannot be traded for a teacher who can describe the “feel” of the actual notes.

Your very lucky to be evaluating such young talent. I bet the music is magnificent. I personally believe that all music is a form of communication. Whether or not the communication is effective or not is another question to ponder.
