Jazz Beyond Jazz was named Blog of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association at the Jazz Awards on Tuesday -- and Tina Marsh, driving force of Austin creative music, died that day, too.

I'm immersed in follow-up on both these and related issues, but details and new posts are guaranteed. As 91-year-old Hank Jones said upon receiving the JJA's award as Pianist of the Year, "This Award is an incentive to do better ."

An international wrinkle on jazz awards: The British Broadcasting Company on Monday night announced 11 winners of the BBC Jazz Awards, Reunited fusion quartet Return to Forever won for "lifetime achievement," bassist Charlie Haden received the "international award," Sir John Dankworth and Dame Cleo Laine were given the "gold award." But who are these other honorees with little reputation in the States. Are they better known throughout Europe? What are we missing?

Why don't jazz journalists care about the biggest names in jazz? When Awards are given for jazz excellence, why don't in-the-know critics applaud the popular musicians, top record sellers and radio playlist stars?

Two upcoming Awards presentations highlight these questions. The Jazz Journalists Association with a cocktail barbeque buffet on Wednesday June 18 at the Jazz Standard, in Manhattan, hails the jazz aesthetic but risks preaching to the choir. The First International Jazz Awards, advertised as a "two-hour televised extravaganza" hosted by comedian D.L Hughley at the Beverley Hilton in Beverley Hills on June 29, bases its nominations on Soundscan's top jazz sellers," contributing to the tautology "What sells best is best." Everyone knows that, right?

Miles Davis intended On The Corner to be a personal statement, an esthetic breakthrough and a social provocation upon its release in fall of 1972. He could hardly have been more successful: the album was all that, though it has taken decades for its full impact to be understood.
