Smithsonian expects another mini-scandal to break
UPDATE, 4/15/08: Here it is.
Over the next few days, you may see a media report on an Inspector General investigation and report regarding Pilar O'Leary, former Director of the Smithsonian Latino Center . In her report, Inspector General Sprightley Ryan concluded that Ms. O'Leary engaged in behavior that violated our Standards of Conduct and other Smithsonian policies between August 2005 and September 2007. Ms. O'Leary resigned and left the Institution on February 8th.
The report was released by the Inspector General in response to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. While our policy is to maintain investigations of employees confidential within our personnel system, in this case the Inspector General concluded that Ms. O'Leary held a position of such significant responsibility and public visibility that disclosure of the report was warranted. The Inspector General has assured us that she has taken appropriate measures to protect the privacy of Smithsonian staff and outside parties in releasing the document.
Over the last year, we have worked hard to rebuild the public's confidence in the Smithsonian, in what we do, and how we do it. Conduct that violates our high ethical standards is unacceptable. As stewards of the public trust, our stakeholders should be assured that we will do no less.
