Were I still in New Orleans, tonight I'd be at a slamming jam session (the likes of which there are too few) celebrating, and raising funds for, a great New Orleans musical tradition: Satchmo Summer Jazz Camp.
NEA Jazz Master Jimmy Heath (who is the artist-in-residence this year), Kidd Jordan, Dr. Michael White, Kermit Ruffins, James Andrews, Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews and many others are gathered with Satchmo Camp alumni at Rosy's Jazz Hall, 500 Valence Street in New Orleans,for a benefit in support of this acclaimed program, which has served more than 1,000 students since its inception 13 years ago. . . .
