Many years ago my amazing talented conductor-husband was reviewed in a London paper, whilst conducting the City of London Chamber Orchestra and described as "every inch a better looking version of Simon Rattle." Whilst he would no doubt have preferred to reviewed as "every inch a better conductor" he may take some consolation from the fact that he has kept his curls brown for a lot longer! I nominate him for Berlin's top spot - he has all the qualifications, no wig needed.

Tweeting is for twits.

I've noticed that the level to which performers are involved in social media is in direct inverse proportion to their career success. The more hopeless the career - the more FaceBook entries. And tweets four times so.

I think Nelsons is the clear winner in the Hair competition, with Yannick as runner-up. (Maybe he and Rattle could switch places, with Yannick in Berlin and Simon in Philadelphia. There are certainly Philadelphians who are fantasizing about that very scenario.)

The Hair loser is obviously Jurowski.

I think Esa-Pekka's Dudamel-do needs to be blond.

What a beautiful tribute to such a great pianist! I have been listening to Van Cliburn since I was a child, and the first time I heard him, I was in awe! I am an artist, a painter who knows very little about music , but anyone, including myself with a pair of ears that work, can hear his fabulous musical talent, instantly! Over the years I have watched TV shows about The Cliburn Competition and have loved watching musicians compete from all over the world!!! Thanks, Amanda Meer for posting this on your blog. And to Mr. Van Cliburn, thank you so much for all the years of wonderful music. You have been an inspiration to so many ,including myself.

I'm not sure that movies ABOUT classical music or opera do as well as the Met perfomances piped into theaters have done. I may be one of a select few member of the general public (ie, people NOT related to cast members) who saw the weirdly interesting movie "Copying Beethoven", an attempt to mimic the success of "Shakespeare in Love". Playwright Damian Lanigan wrote a play called "Dissonance", also about a group of string players. I saw it at the Williamstown Massachusetts Summer Theater a few years ago. So, first, a theatrical play, then a motion picture on the same subject. Could a TV reality show be far behind? Um, not likely.
