Personal recommendations, Manhattan, Aug 13-19

Select gigs, good values -- Jazzmobile's free jazz-jazz concerts in Harlem, and (typically) fine weeks in the chic clubs

The free concerts presented by Jazzmobile, a long-established, Harlem-based organization that runs classes and workshops for musicians all year, too, are like happy block parties:

  • Monday, Aug. 13 -- Harlem Renaissance Orchestra, big band hard swing, 6 p.m. -- free!, Morningside Park (Upper West Side)

  • Wednesday, Aug. 15 -- trombone Wycliffe Gordon, multiple times winner of the Jazz Journalists Association's Jazz Awards, 7 p.m. -- free!, Grant's Tomb (Upper West Side)

  • Friday, Aug. 17 -- uptown secret dynamite pianist Danny Mixon, 7 p.m. -- free!, Marcus Garvey Park, 122nd St. & 5th Ave.

Meanwhile, Lincoln Center Out of Doors presents:

  • Wednesday, Aug. 15 -- composer Carman Moore, coming from the conservatory side of new music, leads his Skymusic Ensemble in tribute to its recently deceased member, improvising violinist Leroy Jenkins, 7:15 p.m. -- free!, Lincoln Center South Plaza, 63rd St. & Columbus

  • Thursday, Aug. 16 -- Craig Harris' TriHarLenium, "a sound portrait of Harlem" by a fiercely independent, gutsy and gusty trombonist & didjeridoo player -- 6 p.m. -- free!, Lincoln Center South Plaza, 63rd St. & Columbus

    • . . . and at John Zorn's recital room The Stone, San Francisco guitarist Duck Baker has curated:
      • Tuesday, Aug. 14 -- Boston-based baritone saxophonist Charlie Kohlhase's Explorers' Club, and duo with Duck Baker, 8 and 10 p.m., $10 - The Stone, 2nd St. and Ave. C (northwest corner)

      • Thursday, Aug. 16-- Outrageous guitarists Eugene Chadbourne and Marc Ribot as well as Duck Baker, 8 and 10 p.m., $10 -- The Stone, 2nd St. and Ave. C

-- also downtown (new club, good buzz)
      • Friday, Aug. 17-Sat. Aug. 18 -- Smart young pianist Manuel Valera's quartet, 9 & 11 p.m., 1 a.m., $5 -- Cachaca New York, 35 W. 8th St. (at McDougal between 5th and 6th Aves.)

      -- finally, costly but cool:
      • Tuesday, Aug. 14 - Sunday, Aug. 19 -- Trio da Paz, NYC's authentic Brazilian jazz combo, with friends, play music of Jobim and Getz -- $35 (cover and minimum) -- Dizzy's Club, Jazz at Lincoln Center, 5th floor, 60th St. & Broadway, 7:30 and 9:30 p.m., on Friday and Saturday also 11:30 p.m.

      • Thursday, Aug. 16 - Saturday, Aug 18 -- Archie Shepp, high drama saxophonist since the '60s, in quartet with AACM keyboardist Amina Claudine Myers -- $30 (cover and minimum), 8:30, 10:30, at Iridium, 1650 Broadway (51st St.), where the iconic, funny and unmissable Les Paul performs every Monday, and the Mingus Legacy Band, with my pal Sy Johnson as musical director, plays every Tuesday.
