Have been making notes, on his comments also....and yes, the "magic" and the soul which Masur helps musicians
and conductors find...often by standing next to him/them....with hands in pockets, which i have watched him do, many times over the seven years.....HIS DEVOTED PRESENCE Is a gift he brings each year to the Manhattan School of Music. HIS PRESENCE, is powerful, most especially as he ages. Today, i felt he was Beethoven,--or maybe they were standing together side by side on stage.......HE IS A LIVING MASTER.. Everyone working with him this week must FEEL IT... many of us cherish being in the audience, listening to Masur and colleagues, making music.

Thank you for posting this. I am a dance teacher who helped form - with great music, dance and drama teachers- a Performing Arts school inside of a public school, here in New jersey.
When the budget didn't pass and things got bad, guess what was the first thing to go?APA
The Performing Arts school brought life inside of those high school children lives, at my third year there, they all "loved" the ballet and danced to Bach music.

I'm very sad and disappointed at our society and the way the Arts is viewed.

Thank you for a great idea! We're going to try this at our chamber music festival next June. It's hard to get feedback from our audience beyond the fact that they pay for tickets and attend the concerts. Of course, the amount of applause a particular piece receives is certainly useful information, but if we just go by that we would program practically nothing but familiar potboilers. Putting post-its in the programs seems a very easy way for audience members to help us fine-tune things.

We did check into that. We spoke to several people well versed in history and in the archives here. It appears that there is virtually nothing extant from that era - a surprise to us. The DR wasn't rich in the resources that Spain was seeking, and they moved on to other lands where the gold, etc., was more plentiful. There are extraordinary treasures here, but original sacred music doesn't seem to be among them.

Sounds like a wonderful project!
Any thoughts of reviving any sacred music from the colonial period that may have survived in the archives of Santo Domingo's churches? (As has been done in several others parts of Latin America.)
