The new MBAs are here

Orientation begins this week for our new batch of MBA students in Arts Administration at UW-Madison. I'm guessing my posting here will be fairly patchy as we welcome the new folks to our program, and get them settled in for two years of arts/business boot camp.

Interesting that you guys offer a MBA instead of an MA or MAM. Can you explain why?

I think, Julie, that the answer is simply that the program was set up accepting the idea that professional arts organization, both non-profit and for profit, are businesses. Without exception. They take the same skill to run as any large for profit company. In fact, I think sometimes they might take more. And what better degree to get if you are running a business that a MBA?

I should point out, in all fairness, that the MBA degree is new to the program. Until recently, students received MABs--Masters of Arts-Business. Close, but not quite and MBA. And for the record, I think the change is a good one.
